OFFICE OF PROFESSIONAL GROWTH & LEARNINGThe Wonderful World of Webquests SYLLABUS
Webquests are an innovative way to help students engage with the content of a course. Students are given a series of tasks that are aligned to the course of study. As they progress through the quest they delve deeper and deeper into the content. Each webquest ends with a culminating activity that asks the students to address a particular issue related to the activities they have completed. The difference between webquests and a traditional class project is that the many levels of activities help the students to gain a deeper understanding of the course content. Additionally, because webquests are Internet based, students are able access resources beyond the textbook and can work at their own pace.
This workshop series will be conducted using a hybrid method, with some sessions conducted online and others face-to-face. As this course is not an introduction to creating websites, it is imperative that you already know how to build a site using Google before beginning this workshop.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES: As a result of this workshop series participants will:
Discuss the usefulness of webquests as an instructional and assessment tool;
Create a website, using Google sites, to host a webquest;
Develop differentiated activities for a webquest;
Create a culminating activity for the webquest; and
Review and critique their colleagues’ webquests
WORKSHOP SCHEDULE:
Day 1: What is a Webquest and How Do I Create One?
Day 2: Creating Learning Objectives
Day 3: Using Primary Documents
Day 4: Developing Activities for a Webquest
Day 5: Your Time to Shine . . . Share Your Webquest
WORKSHOP MATERIALS: Throughout this workshop, you will need the following materials:
Internet access
Curriculum framework for the social studies course(s) you teach
Laptop or desktop computers with recording capabilities or headset
Patience and a willingness to learn
It is my hope that this will be a rewarding experience and that you see the value in using webquests as an instructional tool to get students more engaged and see growth in their academic achievement. With that, let’s get ready for a great adventure!
